This video will help you diagnose code P0171, P2187 and P2279 on an Audi A4 with a 2.0T engine. This may be one cause of your issue but P0171 may refer to a lot of issues. In my case it was a bit easier to diagnose since I could not remove the oil cap while the car was running narrowing down the issue to a crankcase ventilation problem. I replaced the crankcase vent valve and the issue was fixed. It is especially hard to diagnose a P0171 with a generic scanner since in my case when using a dealer level tool the codes were completely different, the stored codes were P2187 – 008583 Bank 1 System too Lean at Idle and P2279 – 008825 Leak in Air Intake System.
